Okay, I know the title is a bad pun, but this article by XCEED Engineering is a pretty good treatise on bolted joints.
Here’s a riddle: If you load a bolt can be loaded with say 2,000 lbs, and you pre-load the bolt with 1800 lbs, then start pulling on the joint, how much load can the joint take?
200 lbs? Not even close.
The joint (depending on the design) could take as much as an additional 2000 lbs. This article explains how that’s possible. Let me know what you think!
